A camera doesn’t make photographs. You do. and I’ll show you how.

Most people with a camera are closer than they think. The gap between the photograph in your head and the one you are actually getting is not about talent, it’s about not yet knowing what to look for. Forty years of doing this teaches you exactly where that is. These sessions exist to close it.

Closing that gap is straightforward when someone shows you where it is. I have spent forty years finding out exactly where it is. These sessions exist to show you.

I came to the first session not knowing what a single button on my camera did. Rod's experience and mentorship made a world of difference. Who this is for

You have a camera you are not really using

It cost more than your phone and takes worse photographs. That is usually not the camera. It is not yet knowing how to use it properly. One session will change that.

You have been shooting for a while but something is still missing

Your results are inconsistent and you cannot quite see why. You are beyond beginner but not where you want to be. At this point you do not need more information. You need someone to look at what you are doing and correct it.

You want to learn properly from the start

Not from YouTube. Not by trial and error over three years. From someone who has been doing this for four decades and knows exactly what matters and what does not.

A DSLR or mirrorless camera is needed, not out of snobbery, but because the work we do together requires full manual control. If you are not sure whether yours qualifies, just ask me.

How the sessions work

We talk before anything is booked

I want to know where you are, what you want to be able to do, and whether one session or three makes more sense for you. No booking form. A conversation, by phone, or over coffee if you are local to Penrith.

One to three sessions, built around you

We work in and around Penrith and western Sydney, wherever makes sense for what you are trying to learn. We work with your camera, at your pace. There is no syllabus designed for someone else. From the moment we begin you will be making photographs, not taking notes.

You leave able to do something you could not do before

Not inspired. Not motivated. Actually able. The difference between those things is what forty years of practice looks like when it is focused entirely on you for a few hours.

Practical details

One-on-one or very small private sessions (maximum of three people)
Based in Glenmore Park, working across Penrith and Western Sydney
One session or a short series depending on where you are starting
Bring your camera, charged battery, and a spare memory card
Pricing is discussed in our first conversation
A DSLR or mirrorless camera is required. Not out of preference, but because full manual control is needed for this work. If you are unsure, ask.

A little about me

Over nearly two decades as a working professional I photographed mayors and CEOs, tradespeople and small business owners, council events and community gatherings across western Sydney. Boardrooms and building sites. All of it.

That commercial pressure built an eye that works quickly and hands that know what they're doing before the mind catches up. More usefully, it taught me how to put people at ease in front of a camera, which, when you are standing next to someone who has never used a camera properly and feels slightly embarrassed about that, turns out to be the most important skill of all.

I have been photographing since I was thirteen. I stepped away from commercial work to focus on what always mattered most. These Western Sydney workshops are part of that.
